As soon as I read the title, I was anxious to read the article. I was not surprised to find out the results of the article that, no, students are not allowed to use any form of technology while taking an exam. I would have been surprised to find out that yes, students are using forms of technology. I am sure that students try to use their forms of technology - cell phones and ipods, while taking a test. As a teacher, one has to be aware of the ways students can cheat.
The technology devices that students have are different from when I was growing up. I wouldn't know how students used these devices for help, but I know that they have it all figured out. As a teacher, we not only need to be aware of all forms of technology but we also need to know how students are using these forms to their advantage.
Hi Amanda,
ReplyDeleteI was going to read this article but was a little scared that it would suggest that it was okay. We offer our National Language tests online (from Quia) but I am a little nervous to create quizzes and tests online as I fear that students will use their laptops to pull in information that I can't see. I still have to explore . . . .
Well...What about the other side of the arguement? We are still thinking about assessing students the "old" way when we are teaching them the "new" way of the 21st century. We are teaching students how to find and evaluate information and how to survive in today's world. Today's world does have information at our fingertips at all times. I still don't let students use technology during a test, but how many times in life are we actually given a test. Most students just memorize things for a test and then forget it as soon as the test is over...don't they? I am not saying either side is right. I am just saying that there may be some valid arguments for allowing students to use technology during some tests. I am usually impressed when my students are resourceful enough to know where to look to find certain information quickly. That is the world we live in! We use it everyday...why shouldn't they?
